Philip Shares What Makes Great Product Design, And Why It All Starts With The User
When people think about product design, they often picture sleek interfaces and pixel-perfect screens. However, the role of a Product Designer is much more complex and more impactful than that.

We spoke with Philip, one of our Senior Product Designers, to get a closer look at what the role involves. From solving user problems through research and prototyping, to working hand-in-hand with engineers and stakeholders, Philip shares what it really means to design for people.
Designing With Purpose
Philip, what does the role of a Product Designer involve?
What a product designer does involves a lot more than most people think. While visual appeal plays a significant role, product design extends far beyond aesthetics; it revolves around functionality and user experience. Effective product design addresses genuine user needs by providing thoughtful solutions to real-world problems.
Product designers are involved in user research, content strategy, information architecture, interaction design, prototyping, and usability testing. We also help shape design systems that make experiences consistent across our digital products.
So, it’s not just about design tools and colour palettes - it’s deep thinking, systems thinking, and most of all, user thinking.
A Typical Day As A Product Designer
What does a typical day look like for you?
I might start my day reviewing insights from user interviews or digging into data from usability tests. Later, I could be mapping out user journeys, sketching wireframes, creating hi-fi designs or building interactive prototypes.
Collaboration is key, I spend a lot of time working with developers, other designers, and product owners to align on the best solutions. We iterate together, test often, and make sure we’re always solving the right problems.
Putting Users First
Philip, what makes product design at Liberty IT unique?
The user is truly at the heart of every decision. We don’t just build features for the sake of it; we identify the problems our users are facing and design with empathy to solve them. That means spending time on user research, journey mapping, and testing our assumptions.
We don’t just guess what works - we test, validate, and learn. One of the things that stands out here at Liberty IT is that we’re trusted to go deep. We’re not just visual decorators, we’re problem-solvers.
The Power Of Collaboration
Are there any particular skills great product designers need?
Collaboration. 100%. Design is a team sport. You can’t create great products in isolation; you must work closely with developers, researchers, content designers, and stakeholders.
Some of the best ideas come out of a workshop or a spontaneous conversation with an engineer. We value everyone’s perspective. It’s through collaboration that we land on real solutions that make a difference.

From Subjectivity To Strategy
How has your approach to design evolved over time?
Early in my career, design often felt subjective, driven by clients’ personal preferences and opinions. At Liberty IT, our approach differs: design must be user-focused and evidence-based.
We analyze data, engage with users, and rigorously test our solutions. It’s a strategic process, not just about aesthetics. This transition from subjective tastes to user-centered design is what makes the work truly fulfilling—we create designs that genuinely create impact.
