At Liberty IT, creating exceptional digital experiences is at the heart of everything we do.

Whether it’s a digital insurance platform or a complex business solution, our product designers ensure that the needs of our users are always at the top of our minds.

We sat down with Anthony Mulvany, Product Owner and previous winner of the Liberty Mutual President’s Award, to discuss why User Experience (UX) is so important and how it shapes how we develop digital products.

Why UX Is So Important

Anthony, can you tell us why UX is so important in product design?

UX is absolutely crucial because, at the end of the day, we’re designing products for real people. No matter how technically brilliant a solution is, if it’s not easy and intuitive for users, it won’t deliver the value we’re aiming for.

Great UX makes complex tasks feel simple, it helps users interact with our products effortlessly, leading to better engagement, higher satisfaction, and, ultimately, success for our clients and customers.

UX at Liberty IT

Can you explain how UX is integrated into the product development process at Liberty IT?

It starts early—right from the discovery phase. Our product designers partner with product owners and engineering teams to deeply understand both the business goals and the needs of the end users.

We spend time researching, interviewing users, and gathering data to uncover pain points or areas for improvement. Once we’ve defined the problem, the UX Designers start sketching out ideas, creating wireframes, and building prototypes.

They test these early designs with users and make tweaks based on feedback, so by the time we get to development, we’re confident that the solution is intuitive and user-friendly.

The great thing about Liberty IT is that collaboration is in our DNA. Whether it’s the Product Designers, Developers, or Data Scientists, we’re constantly working together to iterate and improve the product. UX isn’t an afterthought—it’s woven into the fabric of the product from day one.

How do our Product Designers approach creating great UX?

One of the key things our Product Designers do is focus on empathy—they try to step into the shoes of the user. They ask questions like, "How will someone navigate this?" or "What could be confusing here?" It's not just about making a product look good.

For example, our Interaction Designers are experts in understanding user flows—how people move through an app or a system. They ensure that every click, swipe, or scroll feels natural and gets users where they need to go with minimal friction.

On the other hand, UX Designers dive deep into user research, conducting user testing and gathering feedback to ensure we’re solving the right problems. They help transform those insights into actionable design choices that make the product better.

Anthony, it sounds like collaboration is key. Can you tell us more about how teams work together?

Collaboration really is at the core of everything we do here. One thing that sets Liberty IT apart is that we don’t work in silos.

We work in agile teams, so there’s constant feedback from within the team and from users. We regularly hold design reviews, where we gather input from engineers, data experts, and even end-users to make sure the design makes sense from all angles.

Plus, we use tools like Figma to collaborate in real-time, which makes it easier to bring ideas to life and quickly adapt if something isn’t working.

Finally, what would you say to someone considering a UX or product design role?

If you like solving problems and making technology easier for people to use, then a product designer career could be a good fit. Product designers play such a pivotal role in creating meaningful digital experiences.

Plus, the culture at Liberty IT is fantastic—we value collaboration, creativity, and continuous learning. There’s plenty of support and room to grow in your career.
