Inspiring Girls And Women In Tech: How We Build Belonging And Break Down Barriers

Real Stories, Challenges And Advice From The Women Of Liberty IT
The tech industry has long been stereotyped - but today’s tech reality looks very different, and so does the future we're building at Liberty IT. It's inclusive, human-centred and shaped by diverse minds.
In this article, we’re sharing real insights from three Liberty IT women: Priyanka, Rachael and Lynsey. Each came into tech with different experiences, each has battled impostor syndrome in their own way, and all three are passionate about showing women and girls that there is a place for them here - not someday, but right now.
Technology Needs All Kinds Of Minds
If we want technology that works for everyone, we need everyone helping to build it, and that starts with removing outdated assumptions about who belongs in tech. Across Liberty IT, we’ve seen this play out again and again - people with backgrounds in design, education, business, science and the arts are thriving in roles across UX design, engineering, product and operations.
“Diverse perspectives lead to more thoughtful, human-centred solutions… For younger girls, I’d say; if you’re curious, if you like solving problems, or if you enjoy creating things, tech has a place for you. It’s a field that needs diverse voices, especially women, to build more inclusive and thoughtful solutions.”
Rachael, Senior Product Designer
“Many individuals in tech come from diverse backgrounds and do not always have traditional qualifications, so it’s essential to embrace your unique experiences and skills…. With persistence, self-belief, continuous learning, and the ability to leverage your unique skills, you can thrive in the tech industry.”
Priyanka, Principal Software Engineer
Tackling Impostor Syndrome Head-On
Even with the right encouragement, stepping into a tech role, especially as a woman or career changer, often brings one common feeling: impostor syndrome. We don’t pretend this isn’t an issue; in fact, we openly talk about it, because naming it is one of the first steps to dismantling it.
For Priyanka, mentorship made all the difference:
“Their encouragement has helped reduce my imposter syndrome and build my confidence, inspiring me to keep pursuing my goals. I have been supported by mentors, who have opened valuable networking opportunities, connecting me with industry professionals and resources that have enriched my career. Through their insights, I’ve developed critical skills, making their influence invaluable in my professional journey.”
Priyanka, Principal Software Engineer
Rachael shares how challenging perfectionism and reframing what success looks like has helped her move forward:
“Tech isn’t just about writing code; it’s about using creativity, empathy, and critical thinking to create solutions that matter. For younger girls … don’t let self-doubt or stereotypes hold you back. You’re more capable than you think, and the industry is better with you in it. You don’t need to be perfect or have all the answers, what you do need is curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the confidence to take that first step.”
Rachael, Senior Product Designer
How We’re Making A Difference At Liberty IT
Inclusion is embedded in how we work, not just in what we say. From employee resource groups and mentoring programmes, to returner opportunities, apprenticeships and inclusive leadership training, we’re actively creating a culture where more women can thrive. We’ve also launched STEAM Studio, an education programme designed to inspire the younger generation.
We also know the work isn’t finished. That’s why we’re continuously learning, listening, and adapting — and why we believe sharing stories like these matters.
“The Women in Tech initiative at Liberty IT is incredibly important, not just as a support network, but as a driver of equity, visibility, and opportunity ensuring that women feel seen, supported, and empowered within the tech industry. One initiative I’ve been involved in recently is the Women InTech Lightning Talks, which we launched to help more women build confidence in public speaking while sharing their technical expertise.”
Rachael, Senior Product Designer
“The WIT Employee Resource Group (ERG) is also dedicated to supporting maternity returnees and has implemented a mentoring circle program that creates a peer network for women in Liberty IT. This initiative allows them to engage with and learn from leaders and peers, enabling them to shape their careers and professional development while fostering a culture of collaboration, diversity, equity, and inclusion”
Priyanka, Principal Software Engineer
“As Executive Co-Sponsor of our Women in Tech Employee Resource Group (ERG), I have the privilege of seeing some of the incredible initiatives in place, from mentoring circles and networking events to public speaking training and opportunities to test out presenting through lightning talks… Through our Women in Tech group, employees returning from maternity leave can also avail of a buddy who will help them catch up on what’s changed at Liberty IT, answer any questions they might have or just chat over a coffee.”
Lyndsey, Director of Operations
We Need More Role Models – And That Starts With You
Our three interviewees are already inspiring others, and they stress how much representation matters. Especially for girls still in school or early in their careers, seeing someone like you in tech can be game-changing.
“Mentors and role models have been crucial in optimising my career by providing essential guidance and support, helping me navigate the complexities of the tech industry.”
Priyanka, Principal Software Engineer
