Inspiring Students Through Coding, Creativity And Culture
At Liberty IT, we believe the best way to inspire the next generation of tech talent is to show them just how exciting, creative and impactful technology can be. That’s why we’re proud to launch STEAM Studio Galway, our latest education initiative in partnership with Galway City Museum.
Building on the success of STEAM Studio Belfast, which has already welcomed more than 1,400 students, this new programme connects coding with Galway’s rich maritime heritage to create a unique hands-on learning experience for Junior Cycle pupils.
We spoke with Tony Marron, Managing Director at Liberty IT, and Brendan McGowan, Education Officer at Galway City Museum, about what makes this collaboration special and how it will help shape the innovators of tomorrow.
Building On Belfast’s Success
For Liberty IT, STEAM Studio Galway represents the next step in expanding a programme that has already had a proven impact in Northern Ireland. As with the Belfast programme, Liberty IT employees take part as STEAM Ambassadors, guiding students through the workshops and sharing their own career journeys.
Their involvement ensures students not only develop coding skills but also see, first-hand, the wide variety of career paths technology can open.
“This is a programme we are very proud of and it follows the incredible success of STEAM Studio Belfast which we launched last year with the Ulster Museum. STEAM Studio Galway is unique to the Irish curriculum and the museum experience and we have spent the last six months piloting it with a range of schools and pupils in the West of Ireland - the feedback has been fantastic and we can’t wait to roll it out across Galway and beyond.”
Tony Marron, Managing Director of Liberty IT
What Makes Galway’s STEAM Studio Unique
Unlike a typical classroom workshop, STEAM Studio Galway blends heritage with innovation. The free, four-hour workshop also includes complimentary return transportation for schools, and sessions utilise a school-approved coding platform, allowing students and teachers to continue learning back in the classroom.
Unique to the Irish curriculum and inspired by Galway City Museum’s Galway Hooker exhibition, which showcases the rich maritime heritage and cultural significance of local vessels, students are asked to design and customise their own digital Galway hooker boat while developing coding and problem-solving skills.
“STEAM Studio combines science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics in a hands-on, engaging way to encourage creativity, problem-solving and collaboration. Through this programme, we aim to spark curiosity and build confidence in young people by helping them develop valuable tech skills. By connecting real-world applications with interactive learning, we hope to introduce them to the exciting possibilities that a career in the tech the industry provides.”

Connecting Heritage And Innovation
For Galway City Museum, the partnership is about more than technology; it’s about connecting past and future in a way that’s meaningful for young people.
The museum’s mission has always been to help people learn about their history, celebrate local traditions, and preserve Galway’s cultural heritage for future generations. By weaving coding and creativity into that story, students aren’t just learning a skill - they’re engaging with their heritage in a fresh, relevant way.
“We are delighted to partner with Liberty IT to inspire young people through our maritime heritage, science and technology - honouring the past as we embrace the future.”
Brendan McGowan, Education Officer at Galway City Museum
